In 1535, Saint Angela Merici established the Ursuline Sisters in Italy, in honor of Saint Ursula. The Ursuline Sisters of the Congregation of Paris from Kentucky have been teaching in the Lincoln Diocese since 1920. The schools they served included Saint Bernard Academy, Saint Benedict, and Lourdes Central Catholic, Nebraska City; Saint John, Plattsmouth; Saint Joseph, Paul; and Pius X, Lincoln. By 1987, only five Ursulines were teaching at Lourdes. Sister Jean Stukenholtz is the only Sister currently in Nebraska City.
